NALC has published its response to the 'Citizenship and Civic Engagement' policy consultation. They suggest that local councils can play a vital role in encouraging social cohesion and civic engagement in their areas but more support is needed from higher tiers of government in order for this to happen. NALC call for more freedom and support to be given to local councils to allow them to support their communities in any way they can

This has led to a divisive British society and this select committee wants to explore how and why citizenship and civic engagement has changed and what can be done to improve it across the country. Some Village Greens and common land in England and Wales have no known owners. Local Authorities (including local councils) have the power to protect such land.

This note will look at the relevant law, which is mainly set out in section 43 of the Commons Act 2006 and in sections 38 of the 2006 Act.
