L09-881 Space to Grow

'Growing in the community' highlights the recent revival of interest in 'growing your own'. The consequent increase in the demand for allotments is reflected in lower vacancy rates and lengthening waiting lists across the UK. Over the two years since the publication of the guide, this trend has intensified.

Estimates of waiting lists exceeding 100,000 are widely reported, and few areas have vacant plots. Local authorities have come under increasing pressure to provide new sites, and to accommodate alternative food growing projects where allotments are scarce.

The government White Paper 'Fixing our broken housing market' was published on 7 February 2017 and this is a briefing paper on the main points set out in it.

One of the key aspects of the proposals, of major interest to local councils, is the shift to more strategic local planning at principal authority level with neighbourhood plans and development plan documents becoming predominant for dealing with the detail at a local level. There is also an emphasis on building affordable housing.

A consultation is now running for 12 weeks and will close on 2 May 2017. All responses should be received by no later than 23:45 on 2 May 2017.
